You answered the question yourself. You have to wash the figures first. I use a toothbrush and dish soap to clean figures. DML figures are usually pretty good, but you probably have some with mold release stuff on them. That'll screw up the Vallejos.

Did you shake the bottles vigorously first?
Did you use it right out of the bottle? The various 'how to' use Vallejo articles suggest a primer coat and diluting the paint and applying it in thin coats. That's what I do, and the stuff works.

The most important thing is to clean it first! So scrub off the paint and start over!!
