Hi,
I use Rustall since it is real rust and many effects can be achieved with experimentation. Mixing in pastels or Pigments (Figments, MIG, MMP, or Quartermaster Depot brands) can add variety and texture.
Other ways of adding texture would be to coat the surface with baking powder or use Cast-a-Cote.
For mufflers, I prefer dark brown rust as opposed to bright orange rust. Look at an automobiles muffler; compare it to photos of museum AFVs then go from there.
