As with all creative endeavours, it depends on what one wants.
- Steel wool soaked in water creates real rust which can be painted over any surface. Mixed with a little talcum powder, pastel chalk for color depth and variation, or even a good flat medium creates an excellent paintable mix.
- For exhaust parts, things like RustAll and Instant Rust work well, too. Instant Rust can be found in any decently stocked craft store.
- Another good exhaust effect can be had using Testors Jet Exhaust. It's a metallic color that simulates the brownish discoloration effect of metal from heat.
- Patina kits can be used, depending on the effect desired. They give the surface that greenish hue seen with corroded copper and the like. Once again, a decently stocked craft store will have this product as well.
