Hi Stephen,
Im not an expert either but I have encountered the problem you describe. I would guess that it actually is water and that the problem is worse when it's humid. I would belive you would get rid of the problem if you use a condence separator (don't know the correct English word for this item) between the compressor and air brush. You see, compressed and hot air can hold more water that cold air, and the air cools as the pressure decrese.
