Before you go and prime you're whole figure, I would TEST any primer first. There is some quality about the vinyl used in these kits that inhibits the cure of many oil or enamel based paints. If you use an improper paint, there might be the risk of ruining your project! To be safe, use only acrylics.
Additionally, vinyl has a property that it becomes softer under the application of heat. Heat up the parts with a hair dryer until pliable. Cutting will then become MUCH easier. Addittionally, if you hold the part as it cools, some minor re-shaping is possible, useful if the part is slightly warped or out of alignment.
