I'd recommend a Paasche single action HL. I've had one for ten years and have found it easy to use. While not the best for ultra-fine lines it is excellent for one-colour coats and faded over sprays. They are fairly cheap too.

If you get a compressor then make sure it has a regulator and a water trap. Cans are not a good idea because they drop off in pressure.. in fact you don't even know what the pressure is.
