Aircraft modelers have used the following tip:

Use stiff cardstock pattern templates. Roll masking tape, sticky side out, into tubes which you locate about a 1/4 inch inside of the template edge.

After spraying the lightest color first, add templates for the next color (in order of darkness). The rolled up tape lifts the edge of the template enough to produce a tight feathered edge.

As with all tips, practice on scrap before trying on the kit ;-)
