I once tried wet cotton batting which I applied as a mask. It worked fine but still had the pebbled and some orange peel that spray cans always seem to produce. An airbrush will give you a much better application of paint.
Go get some Floquil or similar durable paint and use your airbrush. Considering how much you spent on this kit isn't worth using your airbrush to do a better job?
