Hi Steve,
I nearly only work with Tamiya paints. I also tried it with water, but it didn't work fine for me. I now use for years just pure alcohol (isopropyl aka propanol). It works very well, it's not so bad for health (but you may get drunken) and it is cheap (I pay for 5 Liters about 8 Euro/US$). So you can also take it for cleaning (pistol, brushes etc). I just can recommend it!
