I've heard that "urban myth" before from the same people too. Specifically it was restricted to the roadwheels being a darker colour. I figure they just are seeing the dirt and grime making the lower hull look darker that the upper areas.
I don't believe it, it's probably a self-perpetuating myth in that community... much like out "Bergetiger" myth (see Dragon's latest 1-72nd scale kit!).
