Well, after the interesting reading of Mr. Zaloga's article, combined with Robert Archer's article on the USAAF side of things, it seems as though Tamiya XF62 OD is a near exact match for OD41 (USAAF), and a near match for OD9 (AGF, aka 319, aka AQM#22 3-1). Since OD41 is darker than OD9, this is consistent with Mr. Zaloga's suggestion to lighten the Tamiya with dark yellow.
Out of curiosity's sake, I have always wanted to see what the actual OD9 fresh color looked like, so I made some mixtures of the Tamiya OD & dark yellow. 20%, 25%, 33%, etc. to get an idea.
Well, to my surprise, when I made the 20 & 25 % mixes, it occurred to me that it is very similar to a color straight out of the bottle. Testors Enamel Green Drab, 1787. To further test the observation, I added Humbrol Ochre (83) to the Green Drab (20%), and guess what. I got a color very similar to PollyScale 505370 (FS34087). That is very consistent with Mr. Zaloga's statement that the PollyScale is a very good 'scaled' OD9.
So, perhaps Testors Green Drab 1787 is indeed the holy grail, OD9 in a bottle! |
