Part of the problem with acrylic washes stems from the use of water as a solvent. Water tends to have a lot of surface tension as anyone who remembers their science classes will know. This can cause the dreaded "ring" effect, as well as other problems. The trick I use is to thin my acrylic washes with a combination of water, Liquitex Slo-dri (a drop or two will suffice) and Liquitex Flow Aid. Both the Flow aid and Slow-Dri break up surface tension and help washes flow better, and the Slo-Dri prevents premature drying and helps prevent wash rings.
Some painters achieve the same results by cutting their washes with a bot of Future. Although effective, I believe this is solving the problem with the wrong methodology, and can increase the number of layers of paint on the model, so I avoid it.
