You may not be doing anything wrong at all. I have found some colors react differently with certain thinners producing the affect you are experiencing. You may need to just try different brands of thinners or use a different color. I generally use Raw Umber and/or Lamp Black from Windsor Newton, Burnt Sienna from Grumbacher and Sepia from Renaissance, thinned with either Turpenoid or Mineral Spirits. I don't recommend regular Turpentine. I have also read of great results from using Humbrol paints for the wash. Hope this helps.
