Michael,

I regularly use Winsor&Newton raw umber, burnt umber and burnt sienna as a wash over acrylics. I have always used turpentine and it has worked quite well without any grains. Make sure that you only use about 5% paint and shake it vigorously before each use. I also use an oversized jar to mix and store the wash so that when it is shaken there is a lot of room fro the mix to move around and break up the pigment. HTH
