Remember Mike, whatever is said here is entirely opinion, and is in no way
based on anything but what each of us like. Personally, I don't have a
problem with anything that tones down that silver look. The most important
part to me is that anytime I look at ANY armoured vehicle, NOTHING colorwise
usually stands out. We may want it to, and we may choose to accentuate a
particular color, but mostly, they are dull, even if they are different
colors. When you are visually struck with a large portion of silver, to me
it just takes away from the overall appearance of the vehicle.
If you want to see a really interesting method of doing tracks, look back
on Volume 4 of Armour Modeling. It was an article by Makoto Takaishi called
Perfect Panzer Finishing Technique. What makes this so interesting (to me)
is that he starts off by painting the tracks with Panzer Grey! He then uses
a series of 7 different pastels (ranging from orange to dark brown) applied
with Tamiya thinner to create one of the most realistic finishes that I've
ever seen. I've only seen it used twice in person; once by myself and once
by Mike Siggins, but to tell you the truth, to me, nothing else even comes
close. It is about the most remarkable technique that I've ever seen, and if
I can do it, anyone can. He actually uses a silver paint stick to drybrush
the high points of the track, but it is toned down by the pastels. Really
remarkable. |
