As the shields extend above the exhaust there would be very little staining on the outside. The shield extended that much primarily to avoid the sparks/flames from the exhaust from giving away it's position at night. you might however stain the engine deck just in front of the exhausts, but only lightly.
I finnished the barrel on my Tiger with graphite and a little black.
Don't forget when you finish a Tiger, it was often used as a battering ram.
