When you paint tracks, try to work from the original. Tracks are usualy made of steel, so a base of steel colored paint would be a good start. Then consider the model you are building. Have the tracks been fitted a long time or are they new? Has the tank been used in the wet/mud? On the road? In the desert/dust? Every scenario needs a different approach. How does the enviroment treat the tracks? trakcs will rust in nothern Europe but not in the African desert. For rusty tracks I first paint them Steel and then use burnt umber pigment to give them the rusty appearance I think you are looking for. Tracks that are in constant use in wet, muddy conditions don't actualy rust, just concentrate on the mud.
