Hi James;
As with any army, the Russians made an attempt at standardization but, as you have assumed correctly, variation was inevitable from factory and batch etc. And obviously the elements played thier part in the field. The great part about Xtracolor is that as they are very mixable and therefore weathering the finish with shading is a breeze.
