I think I can help with this enquirey as I'm a Challenger 2 commander and commanded throughout Op Telic 1 and the pre-deployment package.
different squadrons did slightly different things however most tanks squadrons painted their tanks either at their home base location themselves in the snow or at the port by preffessional sprayers (hence why some squadron's tanks look in much better nick than others) finally some I believe where also painted in Kuwait. As for the thermal sleeves and fume extractors: the QRL painted their fume extractors desert but left their thermal sleaves green/black, tanks from the 2RTR and SCOTS DG battle groups had the whole barrel (except the muzzle) painted desert with narrow black rings around the fume extractor (1 for 1st Troop, 2 for 2nd, etc.) the squadrons of the the Black Watch battle group painted the thermal sleeves desert and the fume extractors either black or white (white for A Sqn Scots DG, Black for Egypt 2RTR, with no troop banding). So you can tell the Battlegroup if not the squadron by how 'blotchy' the desert paintwork was and also the colour of the barrel. The applique armour came in two colours, the side plates where yellow and the toe plate (the ERA on the front) was green painted yellow after it was fitted in Kuwait.
I hope this helps. |
