Micromark sells the chemical you are talking about, called Blacken-it. You just soak the tracks in it for about 10 minutes and it will turn them black. On some types of metals it will even rust them. I've seen this 3-step technique used with great results. 1)Use Blacken-it, 2)give the tracks a wash of rust colored paint, 3)lightly sand the contact points of the tracks to show wear and tear.
