I do not use chemicals. My way is quite easy. assemble the track, then spray it flat black with any colour you like. then spray a thin coat of red brown (misty, maybe using Gunze´s Mr.Mister...just kiddin).
the red brown should be thin and misty. then polish the inner side of the tracks where the wheels roll ant the teeth. on the outside polish the parts of the track that touch the ground (just rub the track on a cardboard). done. fast, easy, safe and cheap.
See the Panther F track, that was weathered in approx 15 minutes.
