| Subject: | Common question... no one correct color | |

Well "dark yellow" is one of the most talked about armor modelling subjects... and there is no one color that may be perfect all the time. There are so many factors to consider:
Aparently the dark yellow paint had organic pigments that don't fade alot but do darken with age (especially on preserved 60 year old stuff that hasn't been repainted)
Parts of vehicles may have been painted separately before assembly (Ft. Knox 251/9 restoration found several distinct shades of dark yellow well preserved from interior/covered areas of the vehicle.
Personal preference
Scale of your model
My choices are as follows: I use Tamiya Dark Yellow, but add some white to lighten it a tough. I think the Testors stuff is too green. Really liked the old Floquil shade alot. Poly Scale is maybe a little greener than the Floquil equivalent. Humbrol #94 Brown Yellow is a new favorite. It has been said to be very close to some good original samples, but also LOOKS good on a model. For smaller scale kits like 1/72 I lighten all the colors alot to make the kit look less dark and more realistic. |
