I don't have problems with acrylics drying too fast, and I thin with rubbing alcohol. This might be a function of where I live (Pennsylvania) which never gets too dry.
One trick you might consider is using a retarder. This retards the drying time of the paint. Make sure you get a LIQUID retarder, rather than a gel (the latter is to maintain body to thick acrylic artists colors). Liquitex Slo-dri seems to be the best, though I also use FolkArt (craft paint) retarder which works well. Finally Vallejo has their own as well. Experiment since I don't know if it will work with all alcohol based hobby paints.
This also has the added benefit of cutting surface tension.
