I'd prefer a semi-gloss, more towards matte.
I have used dead-flat paints like Tamiya but I find these are not realistic looking to me. Gloss is good too since it is a lot smoother and good for decals. But now I use rub-on transfers so this is not important.
If I had to pick either gloss or matte then I'd pick matte sine it is easier to make something gloss than matte after the fact.
