Hi Jay -

I find this topic very interesting, as I feel strongly the way we use paints today is extremely critical to the final outcome. I routinely use both acryclic and enamels, oils and pigments for each model and recently started using semi-gloss varnish from Vallejo to add even more depth to the finish.

Honestly, I find gloss paints for scale models not very realistic except for the car guys. Even for aircraft. I prefer a slightly softer shine somewhere between gloss and semi-gloss for scale modelling, so I would have to agree with Saul that a semi-gloss for armour models is actually the most preferential choice. It allows for greater flexibility to go more matte or more gloss according to the situation, and the amount of depth and metallic sheen created can be stunning when seen in person. I have talked with a few guys here in the US in regards to this subject especially, and we all seem to agree when you see a real tank in person the paint has a slight sheen no matter the time period or country. Every now and then a fresh one will be entirely matt, like a Leo 2A5 or similar - but the vast majority of subjects will require some form of sheen.

So if it is possible, persuade David to try semi-gloss. Since there are plenty of Matte paints to choose from it would be a new market for him and give us modellers even more choices. I hope this has been helpful.

Regards,

Mike
