Hi Jay -
Just saw the new MIS, very nice Centaur AA tank. I've been wanting to build the 40mm Bofors on the Crusader for a while myself.
I may not be the best to answer your questions. Honestly I am npt a decal guy and prefer to use stencils or dry transfers whenever possible. I even resort to handpainted markings when the situation arises. The whole process of matte to gloss to matte is a bit tiresome so I would prefer the gloss in that instance.
As for spraying, I have rarely had any issues with any matte or gloss paints from any brand as the importance I find is in the paint-to-thinner ratio and the ambient temp. and humidity of the workspace. So again, not much help. I guess I'm not as particular as some guys and have had great results spraying with my Iwata as mush as any other reason. The airbrush is more critical to me than the paints going thru it. If anything, Vallejo's eye-dropper style bottles have made life easier than any other single paint line I can recall.
As for drying time, I am always working on multiple projects at once so if one model needs to dry, I switch to another and so forth. I am, however, learning with magazine deadlines and such this may not always be possible, so a faster drying time would always be preferred and thus lean towards the mattes' for now until we have gloss armour paints to try.
The simple answer is to provide us with the gloss and then let us matte it down afterwards. Pigments easily can dull the paint as much as anything, so like I mentioned before providing us with new choice is great by me.
Like I said above, I am not a big fan of decals (why couldn't anyone make decals that stick to matte paint??), so my requirements are not dictacted by them, more by the depth of the finish I can get with the paints and weathering process. I am driven by the thought of trying to replicate the manner in which a model is finished and weathered in the same process it happens in real life. So I often use 10-15 layers of filters, washes, semi-gloss varnish, pigments, etc. to create the final look. I find most paints/supplies in this day-and-age work as advertised and I really buy according to the color requirements for each project. I am often using Tamiya, Vallejo and Humbrol colors on each project nowadays.
I hope this better answers your questions, but my non-traditional methods might not be the best source. :)
Best,
Mike |
