Hello Peter (NL),

When you apply the principle "anything goes" I think you cannot be far off.
Like Paul already said this is a topic that has been studied by many for years and years and as far as I know there can't be a -definitive- answer.

For the simple reason that a given German vehcile X may have left the factory with all its on board equipment nicely painted in either body colours or otherwise according to prescribed rules but after a while in harsh combat conditions would look entirely different.
For example a lost shovel replaced by another from a differently painted vehicle here, some "borrowed" panzer gray jerrycans on a panzer yellow vehicle there, and so on.

It is all not only possible but can be seen in many wartime photos.
Especially towards the end of WW-II more and more vehicles carried an odd mix of equipment, if any at all...

Hope this helps.

Regards
Jerry
