I wash them out in white spirits or thinners then dry them off on cloth,
and store them in a pot with the bristles facing up.
There's the part of the problem there. You need to wash the thinners oot of
them. I use a product called "The Old Masters Brush Cleaner" You can get
it at any artist's supply store if you live in the US. Otherwise use an
inexpensive moisturizing soap and then gently dry them, shaping them into a
point. I also use a cheap hair conditioner and dip the brushes into that
after cleaning them. Brush bristles are hair. Take care of them the same
way and they last.
You will have problems with #1 and smaller brushes. There isn't a lot of
bristle there to begin with and they will start splitting after two or three
uses even with good care. You really have to take care of them to get a lot
of use.
I use W&N Series 7 and Some less expensive sables.
