If you scratch all the way thru the paint layers, you first get a shiny fresh scratch of bare metal. Then in very short order, it starts to "oxidize" into a dullish gray.
As the unprimed metal surface is exposed to air and moisture, the surface starts to film over with a coat of rust. All of course depending on the base metal - steel vs. aluminum - and the moisture, temp it is exposed to as to how fast it forms the rust coat. |
