....and I did not make it as clear as I should have.
The parts of a tank would be first cleaned or treated before the undercoat was applied so as to get a good bond before the application of a top coat. I should have stated that a primer coat was applied to stop surface rust and the top coat was of tactical importance. The thickness and type of steel used on AFVs would mean that they could lay naked to the environment for a very, very long time and not just the hulls and turrets without much affect.
So I was wrong to imply that the paint was not there to stop rust (but unlike a car, a tank is not going to RUST AWAY anytime soon without it, even raw), it most certainly is going to stop rust.
I hope that’s clearer than the wobbly way I wrote above.
