Hi
Oh yeah, I do realize it is v e r y tricky to dare to disagree with a celeb' like Shep Paine, but here I go for the jump, feet first :))
Black is never black.
How's that for a challenge ?
I give you an example; at the moment I own about ten (pure cotton) black t-shirts.
A few are fairly new and I just wore those once or twice, some others are about 6-9 months old and have obviously gone through the washing machine more often.
Sure, they are all black...but hey, if you lay them all out next to each other all of them are a slightly, but really visible, different shade of black.
I.m.h.o. the same therefore obviously applies to German black panzer uniforms.
Somewhere in my library I have a rather old book (1970's) on figure painting.
The author's advise is to mix v e r y small amounts of dark colors like not only very dark grey but also very dark blue or even a touch of very dark purple into your basic black.
E.g add a tiny bit of dark gray for the jacket and add a tiny bit of dark blue for the trousers, to get just that suble bit of difference between one black item of clothing and the next from all day wear and tear.
Works great as this gives your figures' black uniforms that little bit of extra depth compared to just highlighting your plain-black with very dark gray.
Hope this helps.
Bye,
Jerry |
