I think some modellers generally tend to make their models look a bit too old in some perspectives. For example did many AFVs only have an operational life in a few months, so details like mufflers, upper chassis etc never had the time to rust away in that time.
Areas with exposed bare metal such as tracks will of course have a rusty appearance in only a few days if it is exposed to wet conditions or very extreme heat.
In Africa I believe dust was the worst problem. The dust also caused the Desert tan color to be worn off, showing the underlaying panzergray color in serveral exposed areas.
