Yes metals do ruts in desertic areas. You wont find much of rust leaks or stains but if the paint was chipped then the metal underneath would turn out into a black-brown rusted color. Remeber how close they were to the coast and think how much damage the salt water breeze or steam would make in to metals. I live in a desertic area in mexico, more or less like arizona, and I get to see many trucks rusted around here.
