I have to agree with Paul's approach. I have tried many techinques, some of great complexity but I've found that painting the tracks in an earth brown color, dry brushing with steel and then heavy washing with burnt umber gives a great look. If the tracks have rubber pads, I usually paint the pads black after I've done the steel drybrushing. I will then use a gray (usually dark gull gray) to dry brush the pads. It gives a good look of wear and tear on the pads. Then I wash the whole track with burnt umber. If I want more weathering on the pads, I'll use an earth tone powder and rub it off with my thumb. The result is a dusty look to the pads (works really great on Sherman rubber chevrons).
