Hi Martin :)
Make you sure you protect your paintjob with a coat of varnish. Preferably gloss, as this makes the decals blend in. Attach decals and add a matt varnish to seal them and give the wash some 'tooth' to grab onto.
Mix up some paint with thinner (small, aluminium candle cups work well) and apply this to the model. Applying thinner to the model might work, but it gives you less control of where the paint flows.
