Gentlemen and ladies,

Sorry to take this long to reply, but paint takes a while to dry.

I find this an extremely interesting subjectworthy of further research.

So I decided that a little experimentation to test the various theories was necessary.

Therefore, using a Canon A1 film camera equipped with a 50mm lens, slide film and using a series of aperatures and f-stops, on an overcast day, I took a number of photographs of my unwashed car.

I live in the southwestern region of Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh - the second home of dreary weather.

The first series of photographs were from 3'feet of the automobile. I then moved back to about 105' and took the second series photograph.

The second series of photographs show a remarkable tonal shift to a much lighter and GREYER colors also the gloss of the paint was not evident.

Finally, to determine that if distance alone was the determining factor, I enlarged varios portions of the photographs and compared them to each other. I discovered that even though I enlarged the photographs, the color variations were STILL evident, just not as much.

Continuing the experiment I then, using Krylon attomobile touchup paint, I mixed varios proportions of white to try to approximate the colors as seen - this proved to impossible. While the colors of course lightrnrd the color tones did not match the slides.

I then used a mixture of grey and blue to see if this world work. After a series of proportions, I found that of 60% light grey and 40% light blue togrther with the base color gave me the best results.

Therefore, I suggest the following:

If we are building a 1/35th model so as to be seen as the actual vehicle, OMIT all small details, including rivets, seams, and anything else that sits up less than about three inches from the base unit (i.e., tank itself) as these are invisible to the naked eye from the apparent viewing distance. Also, more germane to the issue at hand, the colors should be muted about 75% by the addition of a bluish grey - NOT WHITE! - to most colors. The only exception that I found was in black and white - black needed 25% light blue only while white needed 20% light grey.

However, if we are to build a 1/35th scale model so as to be seen as a SCALE REPRODUCTION of the vehicle in question; we need to ADD everything that appears on the actual vehicle in the appropriate size and do make NO SCALE EFFECTS to the final colors.

Tom
