I seldom like to get involved in these discussions that have no correct answer. I learned this the hard way from a very evil art instructor that I can not thank enough for what she taught me. I was having trouble being too technical in my work (her opinion but she gave the grades) and she made me a pet project to learn how to "open your eyes and see".

I was given a plastic Daffodil in a white vase. I was then told to paint the flower exactly the same view in Tungsten light, flouresent light, north light and on green mat, blue mat, and red mat. Then she had me paint the same flower at 8am, 10am, noon, 2pm, 4pm, 6pm, evening light. (I really hated her)

By the time the lesson was over I began to actually see the tremendous differences in the colors and their relationship to each other. Even though the item was identically the same color every time the effect of light and enviroment changed it radically.

Because of this lesson I can not find there is any way to paint a model accurately the proper color, since it would depend on the season, the distance, the time of day, the weather, and enviroment just to name a few.

So I guess the only thing left is paint what looks right to you and be happy. As far as scale effect, look at a good painting of an airplane and look what the artist did as far as color on the near wing tip compared to the far wing tip. Not much distance but the effect is tremendous in the painting and in the real world.
