From my limited knowledge of chemistry and paint technology, I would say there is no doubt about it!
All paint fades, some colours fade faster than others, red, brown, and then orange fade fastest. I'm told this is due to the size of the molecules in the pigments, but not being a chemist, I can't explain much better than that. Im not sure how quickly yellow fades, but any brown pigments in it certainly fade pretty quickly.
Paint technology has moved on in the last 15 or so years and problems with fading are not so bad now, but 60 years ago they were supplying the crude paint in a gel form which was diluted with petrol.. hardly the pinical of paint technology. So I doubt there was anything in it to protect from UV radiation. |
