Everything would have been primed with red oxide primer.
If you are thinking of doing some sort of "chipping" weathering scheme you should know that this was virtually unknown on American tanks (or German for that matter) with factory applied finishes. What may look like chipping is usually just mud.
What's even more bizarre in most of the "chipped" models I've seen is that they tend to show rust coming from the welded joints. I say bizarre because in WW II armor plate welds and welds to armor were made with austenitic (i.e. stainless steel) weld metal. Ferritic - rustable - weld metal was not able to be properly developed during the war. Stainless alloys were used because they were not suceptible to embrittlement and cracking. Even today old monument tanks - no matter how rusty overall - still have bright, shiny welds under the flaking paint and staining.
