Well, it _is_ actually "wrong" and "unrealistic" because, as you say, it's "not true to the historical and technical facts of most of these vehicles." However, people can build their models any way they want, so you can't label _their decisions about what they like_ as "wrong". A misunderstanding of this distinction is at the root of many arguments, I think.

You hit the nail on the head when you said "it looks awesome." There have always been "artists" and "engineers" in scale modeling. I'm one of the latter and I like models that look like miniature tanks, both in detailing and weathering. These models typically are not stunning in their look, however. Artists obviously do not have the same view, and I believe tend toward the awesome presentation above other factors.

I think the hobby has plenty of room for both "Realistic" and "Awesome" models. Each is what it is and that's fine. My only peeve is when someone labels a rather broad artistic interpretation as being more "realistic" than some other correct - but drab - piece.
