Hi Ron,
Look in the articles section of Track Link and find Paul Owen's article "Weathering Heresies" Weathering 1/35th Scale AFV's. It's excellent and offers some insights on washes. Or, pick up a copy of Shep Paines "Building Diorama's" another excellent source.
Essentially, washes are used to accent recesses in models, e.g., seam lines. You take the basic model color and use a darker shade. I use acrylics exclusively for the base coats and oils for the washes. As Shep Paine put it, "you want tinted thinner and not thinned paint."
Applying a wash is very easy. After allowing the base coat to "cure" for a day or so, mix a tiny amount of oil paint to thinner. For thinner, I use, Houston Art Odorliss Paint Thinner. Apply the wash using a wide, soft bristle brush, allowing the wash to flow into the recesses areas. Wipe the excees off with an old cotten Tshirt. Allow to dry and repeat as necessary.
Paul Owen suggests using raw umber when applying a wash to Panzer models painted dark yellow. I think that works very well.
Hope this helps.
