Wrong or right? As long as you enjoy what you're making I don't see what's wrong with that. It's a hobby after all.
However... attached is a very remarkable photograph. It exhibits some weathering that is rarely seen on models. Note the overall dusty appearance is not uniform. This would be impossible to simulate with an overall spray of Tamiya Buff (which is the norm), rather one would have to build up the dust with successive small applications of thinned out paint applied with a brush. Note that there appears to be some "chipping" around the hatches... this is actually worn off dust with the OD buffed to a shine. Note that old dust has settled in the crevices particularly around the mantlet. This is the complete opposite of applying a dark wash.
A model painted like this would be both extremely weathered and accurate.
