I thought he said something like: "Paint X is closer to the postwar OD and too green for WW II. . ."

What's interesting about that chronology was that the x4087 mix up was plain and simple a mistake - the correcting amendment says as much. (This is the only "admitted" mistake in the entire MIL/FED spec system I've ever seen.) IIRC, 14087 and 24087 were a different basic color than 34087 with Rev A. Apparently no one noticed the difference for about 20 years, or they did and just attributed it to the variance in gloss.
