I normally scrape a quantity of chalk off with an x-acto blade, and
apply it with a brush. Sometimes I will crush the resulting pieces if
there are large ones with the top of the handle. Use an old brush,
because they don't last long doing this.
For colors, I use black mixed with dark brown for shadowing, and a
little tan here and there for dirt. Some folks use orange blends and
brown for rust- this is achieved by mixing the pastel powder with Tamyia
thinner and using a brush to apply.
