I think the bright red-rust we see on models is not correct. A more realistic appearance would be to show the paint much darker if not burnt. When oxidation appears it will be more of a dark brown patina with grime and dust baked on (something to consider eh?). Sort of like your truck's exhaust.

This would not appear straight away, there would be a progression from freshly painted to the above. So it's not all or nothing.
