I was fortunate enough to spend a dozen years of my youth working in oilfield construction, mostly on winch trucks and bulldozers with winches. The first time a tow or winch cable is strung out through mother nature's earth, that cable became the color of dirt, a dull greyish brown color (depending on location of course). The dirt becomes embedded into the twist of the cable and while the friction of being dragged throught dirt may actually clean the cable up a little bit, the best I could say, was that it then became a metallic brown. The only obvious rust tended to be on unused, frayed and or broken cable. The only maintenance done was to examine the cable as it was be rewound onto the drum and to try to get a good, tight wrap from time to time. I'm proud to say that I never had a wich line failure, although I did break a winch once.

Now if that cable did get dragged through sand, snow or a grassy swamp,
the cable did regain a touch of its original metallic appearance, but it didn't take long before it had its dirty look again. Gotta say that I'm glad that greasing cables was not part of our practice...the job was messy enough without adding dirty grease to the equation.
