I've gotten great results using the following combination:
Tamiya Acrylic Paint
Tamiya X20A thinner, thin the paint to a skim-milk consistency.
!! Higher than normal pressure-25-30 psi !!
I am using a Paasche VL with a # 3 needle and tip, and have used this comination to paint both armor camo and 1/48 Luft camo.

A lot of folks have commented on the pressure issue- I find that at lower pressures I see the tip clogging and splattering issues get worse, where at 25-30 I get a very fine atomization of the paint and a very smooth finish.
