Concord's 'Armour of the Deutsches Afrikakorps' has a painting of an Ausf N which it says was painted brown over grey. It also includes a photo of an Ausf N (no. 242, called 'Mauseauge'), which seems to be brown, but has what looks like grey on the inside of the turret side hatches (which are open). Restayn's 'Tiger I on the Western Front' depicts the Ausf N's as brown, but he doesn't really comment on the colour.
Ausf N production began before the introduction of the dark yellow base colour, so some of them were grey (I have at least one photo of a knocked out grey Ausf N in Russia). sPz.Abt. 504 used Ausf J's rather than Ausf N's, so I think you're only looking at vehicles issued to sPz.Abt.501. It was apparently issued with early Ausf N's, built on the Ausf L chassis, which would have been grey before they were converted over. We also know that many vehicles sent to North Africa were sprayed brown in the factory - including at least some of sPz.Abt. 501's Tiger I's (it appears that only the initial Tiger I's sent over were painted green).
My guess is that most of sPz.Abt. 501's Ausf N's were brown over grey. However, the photos of Ausf N's in Tunisia show little or no sign of worn paint - they tend to be relatively pristine (unlike, says, DAK vehicles in 1942). This might be because they weren't in sevice very long before the end of the North African campaign. |
