Hey Guys ,

I have read many different a story on this and I have looked over many DAK photos . This is pure conjecture by me but I have read and refrenced many a photo. I believe 95 percent of all armor brought to Africa was at one time Grey . We know that the early stuff was for sure and there is all this paint chipped and rubbed off for sure . Now this early armor was hastily painted or covered with some sort of sand camoflage . These vehicles were painted out in the enviroment and not professionally cleaned and prepped . So combine this hasty camoflage along with the Sand and Sun of the desert that was blasting and baking it away you get this rubbed off and chipped effect. Now as the war progressed in Africa in 42 these vehicles were painted in warehouses and maintenance buildings in Europe for the most part . So from 42 on there is not as much rubbed off and chipped paint better paint preperation gives a better paint bonding .Now move these better painted tanks into Tunesia were it was no where near as hot and no where near as much sand you take away the heavy weathering of the desert on the paint . Also remember that most of these tanks were only in operation for a matter of two or three months before thier demise .Now I have found a couple of Pz III N's that have the turret doors open and the ring under the door edges is definetly Grey where the paint couldnt get past the shut doors . So this to me is a definite sign of Grey under base . Now I also believe there is a good chance that there were some vehicles that were posted to Afrika at the production sites and may have been factory painted as so . Well I have blabbered on long enough thats my two cents worth , hope it helps .

Brian
