It is very easy to go overboard with this technique when you are first learning it.
I have found that subtle application of pastel chalks is best. This should be the final step in completing your model. In fact, I do not use pastels on the model until it has been bolted/affixed to its diorama base.
Avoid touching the model afterwards, as the pastel weathering can rub off. During the weathering process with pastels, any mistakes can be easily corrected by rubbing off the chalk with a moistened cotton swab.
